The Green River Rafting Experience:
The 5 day/ 4
night Whitewater Rafting School trip is an incredible opportunity for first-time boaters, private river runners and anyone who wants to learn the ways of the river guiding profession. Training includes rigging boats, safety techniques and river rescue, equipment maintenance and most important of all, rowing and paddling a raft downriver. The river is the classroom with world-class guides sharing professional skills, talents and wonderful stories.
The Classroom
We start with two days of classroom, warehouse and commissary instruction. This will include rigging a boat, basic knot tying, cooler packing, safety procedures, equipment maintenance, river rescue techniques and many other river guiding facets. In the afternoon of day two, we will drive from our Moab office to the launch site at the Sandwash Boat. There you will assist in unloading gear and rigging the boats prior to a riverside dinner.
The Green River
The following morning our 5 days "on the water" portion begins. On the water you will learn such things as techniques of rowing and paddle captaining, river signals, river safety, reading whitewater, and the history and geology of the river corridor. This part of the Green River is perfect for learn how to maneuver whitewater rafts. Desolation and Gray Canyons are 84 miles of 50 class I-III rapids that start the second day of the trip and build each day until the largest and best rapids the last day. This allows for training and practice before getting to the bigger whitewater.
We will also hike, offer safety talks, flip drills, z-drag set-ups, throw bag usage and teach swimming in whitewater. In camp you will learn kitchen set-up,
groover set-up and placement, camp talks, techniques for entertaining guests, and the general camp scene.
The Debrief
The last day will be spent debriefing the previous 5 days with your instructors. This will be your chance to ask any questions you may have with of the staff.
The Ratio
Our instructor to student ratio is never more than 1 to 4. This way we can give students with different abilities individualized attention. The Training
The training includes how to rig for trips and how to load rafts, both paddleboats and oarboats. This class will teach you basic river safety, river rescue and overall river etiquette. You will also learn how to store and maintain a variety of boating equipment. You will of course will also learn rowing and paddling skills for both flat-water and whitewater. This class is geared towards commercial aspects of
boating, so you will also learn about cooking in the outdoors, and general knowledge of Westwater Canyon and the surrounding area.
The Instructors
All of our instructors are licensed by the State of Utah as professional River Guides. They have extensive first aid training either as a First Responder or Wilderness First Responder along with CPR. All have been trained in Whitewater River Rescue and Safety and have taken "train the trainer" classes. Our Instructors have years of experience as Boatman and Trip Leaders, many have worked throughout the United States and rafted in exotic locals, such as Africa, Asia and South America. They are TRUE PROFESSIONALS.
