The Yampa River Rafting Experience:
The
Yampa River is the only undammed river on the
Colorado River drainage. The 5 day Yampa River trip is
a guide favorite and is entirely within Dinosaur National Monument. Enjoy the
solitude of a wilderness river, an experience truly off the beaten path. Float
by Desert Big Horn Sheep as they drink at the river's edge. Eagles and hawks
soar overhead coasting on the thermals. We will also float by the spectacular
1000 foot tall Tiger Wall. We then come to Warm Springs, which will not
be as big as it was in spring but is still exciting and the biggest rapid on
the Yampa River.
Clean air of the
Yampa River amplifies a vibrant blue sky, creating
a perfect environment for hikes and unparalleled photographic opportunities.
Each day, time is set aside for exploring geological and historical sites such
as the Mantle Cave, once inhabited by the Fremont people 1000 year ago.
Stargazing is an inspiring activity as the clear air and remote setting provide
a star show usually reserved for astronomers and their telescopes. The camps
are beautiful set under canyon walls, Ponderosa and Box Elder trees, and the
sound of the river lulling you to sleep.

Rafting the
Yampa River is like traveling through time. Each
of the river canyon's various layers represents an entire age of the earth's
development: the rise and fall of major mountain ranges, the arrival and
retreat of oceans at least 12 different times, and the alternating development
of deserts and swamplands. At Split Mountain, past the confluence of the Yampa
and Green, you'll pass through a hole carved out of a wall by the river itself.
The Yampa and
Green
Rivers are sisters. The last two days of both journeys are the same as the
rivers merge at Echo Park, deep within the Monument.
*There is limited access to
the Yampa River; so few people have the
opportunity to explore these areas. This river books quickly.
