Labyrinth Canyon Fit Kayaking Tour
This year Sheri Griffith Expeditions is excited to be working with Melanie Webb of Sol Fitness Adventures to offer a brand new way to experience Labyrinth Canyon!
 Melanie Webb is a former wildlife biologist and environmental consultant who is now one of the Top Trainers in the fitness industry. She has been featured on Good Morning America, in Outside and New Beauty magazines, and is now a brand ambassador for ATHLETA.
We met Melanie when she was a tour director for a group of guests that we hosted on a river trip in 2013. Since then, we have been working with her to create a Fitness Adventure for the River. We are excited to introduce our Labyrinth Canyon Fit Kayaking Tour this September!
The Fit Kayaking tour will combine all of the highlights of our Women-Only Kayaking tours with the Health and Wellness tours that SOL Fitness Adventures offers. There is no experience in either kayaking or fitness necessary to have a great time on this trip. By the end of the first hour on the river, you’ll feel like you were born to kayak, and with the additional tutelage of Melanie each morning, mid-day and evening, you will find a renewed sense of wellness in mind and body.

Nature Inspires Creativity! In 2006, Oprah’s O magazine featured these trips as “One of the top six, great all-girl getaways of the year.” Personal writing time is woven into the moments between floating down the Colorado River, optional hiking, relaxing on shore, and “circling up” with Page, Ellen, the other river women, and SGE’s fabulous women guides.
Storytelling on the River! Who told you your first story? For most of us, it was a woman. “ We pass the great stories down from generation to generation,” Ellen tells us. “ Mother to mother to mother. And so many of our stories are about journeys—heroes and heroines who leave the confines of the familiar and, in the spirit of curiosity and adventure, light out into the unknown.  Join the Heroine’s Adventure! Sunday night’s orientation at SGE is followed by dinner with Page, Ellen, and the other women guests. The trip launches Monday morning, August 11th. You’ll float down the Colorado River, past the confluence of the Green River, through beautiful Cataract Canyon, culminating with a breathtaking scenic flight from Lake Powell back to Moab. SGE provides everything—rafts, tents, sleeping bags, fresh healthy meals, etc. The fabulous women guides do all the cooking and rowing!

Top Ten Rafting Hikes
Our rafting trips are about a lot more than just whitewater. We travel by boat to some of the most remote parts of the country. The locations we travel through are protected as National Parks, National Monuments, registered national landmarks and proposed wild and scenic rivers. Many of these amazing side hikes are not a accessible from roads. The hikes vary in length from 15 minutes to all day. They include waterfalls, Native American ruins, wildflowers, wildlife and just amazing beauty.

Dark Canyon
(Cataract Canyon)
- Length: 8 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
- Vertical gain: 1000 feet
- Attractions: Waterfalls, towering 2000 foot canyon wall
- River and Section: Colorado River through Cataract Canyon
- Description: Dark Canyon is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is not always open because of the water levels of Lake Powell. When we get the chance, this hike is like heaven on earth. Towering red rock walls line the canyon. Clear water cascades down a variety of waterfalls and swimming pools, some over 25 feet deep.

Jones Hole
(Green River)
- Length: 4 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 4 hours
- Vertical gain: 60 feet
- Attractions: Native America petroglyphs, clear creek, Wildlife, waterfall
- River and Section: Gates of Lodore and Yampa River
- Description: The Jones Hole hike is famous for the variety of wildlife that is in the valley, including eagles, falcons, big horn sheep, and marmots. The trail wanders alongside the clear creek with many swimming holes and ends in a playful waterfall. A short way further up the trail are stunning pictographs.

Little Dolores
(Westwater Canyon)
- Length: 2 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 1 hour
- Vertical gain: 50 feet
- Attractions: Black rock canyon, raging waterfall
- River and Section: Colorado River through Westwater Canyon
- Description: This waterfall hike runs only in May and June. The Little Dolores Creek cascades along a black shist rock canyon carved thousands of years ago. The rock is over 1.7 billion years old! This creates amazing patterns and flute like shapes. The waterfall pours out of the side canyon and we are able to swim right under the falls.

The Doll's House
(Cataract Canyon)
- Length: 8 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: Full Day
- Vertical gain: 1000 feet
- Attractions: Native American ruins, panoramic views of Canyonlands National Park.
- River and Section: Colorado River through Cataract Canyon
- Description: This challenging hike offers some of the best views of the Colorado River and Canyonlands Nationals Park. The Dolls House is named for it’s towering red rock peaks that John W. Powell thought looked like European dolls. The hike includes a cool slot canyon, views of the surrounding mountains, the Needles and native American ruins.

Flat Canyon Petroglyphs
(Green River)
- Length: 1/4 mile round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 15 mins
- Vertical gain: 10 feet
- Attractions: petroglyphs, towering 2000 foot canyon walls
- River and Section: The Green River through Desolation Canyon
- Description: An easy and very entertaining stroll to a giant and impressive panel of Fremont writings. The panel has an amazing number of writings and the guides will teach about what they may mean and what happened to this ancient culture.

Rippling Brook
(Green River)
- Length: 2 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 2 hours
- Vertical gain: 300 feet (extremely strenuous)
- Attractions: Gorgeous views of the Green River. Spring fed water fall.
- River and Section: The Green River through Gates of Lodore
- Description: This fairly steep hike has photo opportunities at each switch back. The trail climbs the side of the canyon with views of the Gates of Lodore that are hard to beat. This all ends at a spring-fed waterfall.

Whispering Cave/Echo Park
(Green River)
- Length: 6 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 1-2 hours
- Vertical Gain: 10 feet
- Attractions: Native American petroglyphs, cave exploration, Pat Lynch hide out
- River and Section: The Gates of Lodore and the Yampa River
- Description: At the confluence of the Green River and Yampa River is a glorious hiking opportunity at Echo Park. Petroglyphs, Whispering cave, and a hermit hideout are just some of the attractions on this hike.

Rock Creek Ranch
(Green River)
- Length: ¼ mile round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 1 Hour to Full Day
- Vertical gain: 10 feet
- Attractions: Rock Creek Ranch, Outlaw Hideaway
- River and Section: The Green River through Desolation Canyon
- Description: See where Butch Cassidy and his gang of outlaws stayed. Historical orchards full of fruit during August, and a longer hike is available to see outstanding petroglyphs and granaries.

Indian Creek
(Cataract Canyon)
- Length: 4 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 3 hours
- Vertical gain: 100 feet
- Attractions: Waterfalls, towering 2000 foot canyon walls, Native American ruins
- River and Section: Colorado River through Cataract Canyon
- Description: In the spring, Indian Creek Falls is a highlight of our Cataract Canyon trips. Indian Creek starts miles away in the Abajo Mountains. 3 miles from the river is the beautiful, secluded Indian Creek waterfall.

Bowknot Bend
(Green River)
- Length: 2 miles round trip
- Avg Hiking Time: 2 hours
- Vertical gain: 700 feet
- Attractions: The views of the Maze section of Canyonlands National Park.
- River and Section: The Green River Through Labyrinth Canyon
- Description: Here the Green River makes an 6 mile loop and is only ¼ mile from itself. This hike is a little bit challenging with 700 feet of vertical gain in little over a mile, but the views are worth it.

SNOTEL Reports Looking Good for the 2014 White Water Season!!!
SNOTEL is an automated system of snowpack sensors operated by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This system is one tool used to estimate what kind of the river runoff we can expect. SNOTEL sites report the current snowpack/moisture content expressed as a percentage of the average of the last five years for that date.
Unfortunately, the California Mountains have experienced a low snowpack so far this winter. Due to this lack of moisture and continuing drought conditions, the state of California has declared a state of drought emergency. It seems that their state will be relying heavily on its allotment of the Colorado River for water needs in 2014. This most likely means that they will allow more water to be released from the Glen Canyon and Hoover dams to help ease the lack of water.
The Colorado Plateau supplies the majority of the water in the Colorado and Green Rivers. The Gates of Lodore and Desolation Canyon on the Green River receive their water from the headwaters in the Wind River Range of southwestern Wyoming. The runoff from these mountains is stored in and released from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The Yampa River is a free flowing tributary joining the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument. The 2014 SNOTEL sites currently show that the Colorado River Basin is at 106% of average and the drainage for the Yampa River is at 107% of average, with the wettest months of winter still to come. Actual river runoff can change depending on total snowfall as well as how fast the runoff occurs. At this point we are very excited about the 2014 rafting season!

AOA is a great tool to grow an outdoor outfitters business to become bigger and greater in their field with experts from their field. Camaraderie with friends yet competitors is a great way to excel in giving the best and greatest experience in our industry.
With that said, Sheri Griffith River Expeditions spent a week at the AOA Conference taking in so much information and making connections to grow and expand what we can do for our guest and their experience.
At the AOA trade show Arlo and Emma looked at the new and upcoming equipment from boats, life jackets, and all the new trinkets!! Proud to say we are ahead of the curve in providing top-of-the-line equipment. There was also great information on the new Google algorithms and many other marketing tools.
Though the Internet is very important, we still feel providing great trips and great customer service will carrier us higher! !

Cataract Canyon...Now with New Rapids!
September’s record breaking rains and the shrinking of Lake Powell have combined to form some new rapids in Cataract Canyon. For about 10 years, Lake Powell has been at record lows. These low lake levels have allowed the Mighty Colorado River to reclaim some of its former rapids. This has given us the chance to run 5 “new” rapids including the very fun and almost mile long rapid of Water Hole.
Our operations manager, Brenda, was able to squeeze in a Cataract Canyon trip before the government shutdown during the last week of September, and she reported lots of new debris flows from the recent rains.
One of these mudslides created a brand new rapid! Here is Brenda’s description of the new unnamed rapid: “A brand new rockslide has come from the right-side of the canyon to narrow the channel below Water Hole Canyon. At the low water level I ran it at it is was not huge maybe a class 3. The start of the rapid has a classic “V” into some fun splashy waves. If you break through the “V” to the left there is a runnable hole. The hole is little smaller than the Little Delores hole on Westwater Canyon. This should be a really fun rapid at higher flows.
YEAH new RAPIDS!"
